I've been a therapist for over 30 years, in a bunch of different settings: medical, hospice, inner city, underhoused, LGBTQ+, men's mental health, and feminist political community, in New York City, Spanish Harlem, Sacramento California, Toronto, and Vancouver.

I believe very strongly in the need for excellent clinical technique; clients deserve it, and therapists need it in order to feel confident and avoid causing harm. Yet, the details of clinical skills are often neglected in counselling education, and they're a mystery for many therapists. I coach counsellors in clinical technique using ordinary language instead of cliches or technical jargon. You will really gain clarity in how to do your work!

The mini-seminars

The inception of Practical Counselling Skills mini-seminars stems from my sense that while people seeking therapy are vulnerable, hurting, and confused, they sometimes meet therapists who do not do a great job.  Every counsellor, whatever their modalities or beliefs requires the same foundational skills to build secure therapeutic connections and avoid errors, ensuring clients are in capable hands. Counsellors at any stage of their career can gain enhanced confidence, achieve clarity in their work, and minimize clinical errors through our focussed mini-seminars on foundational skills.

A Distinctive Approach to Supervision Groups

My supervisory approach diverges from many other supervisors who  assume knowledge of the client without understanding the challenges the counsellor is facing. I help my supervisees become personally self-aware in clinical realtime, so that their emotions and judgments don't interfere with the work, in what is sometimes called the "person of the therapist" model.  I prioritize honing your foundational counselling skills while helping you mindfully note and accept your emotional states while working. With over thirty years of experience as an individual and group therapist,  supervisor, and radio talk show host featuring community conversations I am adept at facilitating inclusive and non-competitive conversations, and I avoid clinical buzzwords to communicate clearly and effectively with my groups.

Who Benefits Most?

Our mini-seminars and supervision groups are beneficial for both new and experienced counsellors. We have skilled student interns and practitioners with 25+ years experience in the same groups, and everyone learns, and everyone is an equal. We welcome all counselling modalities, fostering an environment where participants from diverse backgrounds collaborate. You will refine your skills, gain fresh perspectives on clinical techniques, and connect with caring,  compassionate colleagues to discuss cases, general clinical issues, and theoretical questions.
